Volunteers Honor Dr. King’s Legacy at MLK Day of Service

More than 100 volunteers gathered at El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank on Monday morning to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a morning of service and collective impact.

The event, sponsored by FirstLight Federal Credit Union, welcomed community members from across the region to sort and pack food for neighbors in need. It also marked El Pasoans Fighting Hunger’s 10th anniversary as an independent food bank.

Mayor Johnson joined EPFH leadership during the opening remarks and spoke on the importance of unity, compassion, and community action in continuing Dr. King’s work.

Volunteers participated in activities including carrot repacking and emergency food box preparation, helping the food bank gear up for the week ahead. But beyond the day’s immediate impact, the event also highlighted the long-term partnerships that help El Pasoans Fighting Hunger prepare for the future. FirstLight Federal Credit Union’s ongoing support is part of that effort. In a video interview, Diego Acosta, Business Development Officer at FirstLight, emphasized commitment.

El Pasoans Fighting Hunger continues to serve families each week as food insecurity grows across the region. Events like the MLK Day of Service help raise awareness, foster connection, and remind the community of the power of coming together in service.
