EPISD Opens First High School Food Pantry at Irving High

In a powerful show of unity and compassion, El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) has opened its first-ever high school-based food pantry at Irving High School, with support from El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank (EPFH) and students from across the district. This new pantry is more than just a food resource, it’s a student-led effort to nourish their community and create a welcoming, dignified space for neighbors in need.

The pantry, located on the Irving High School campus, will serve students and families experiencing food insecurity in the area. As food insecurity continues to rise across El Paso, this initiative marks a major step forward in making nutritious food more accessible.

But what truly sets this pantry apart is the creativity and collaboration behind it.

Students at Irving transformed the pantry space by creating original artwork to make the environment more inviting. They also personally stylized each shopping bag handed out to families, turning a routine task into a message of care and solidarity. Their artistic contributions reflect the heart of EPFH’s mission: to feed hope, nourish dignity, and empower neighbors.

Support also came from fellow students at Bowie High School. Volunteers from Bowie, who operate their own successful drive-up food distribution program, played a key role in helping bring the Irving pantry to life. Their experience and energy helped shape the setup, logistics, and vision for the new site — a beautiful example of cross-campus camaraderie and commitment to community.

A representative from EPFH said, “It shows what’s possible when schools come together not just to educate, but to care for the whole person, including making sure no student or family goes hungry.”

As EPFH continues to expand school pantry partnerships, efforts like this underscore the importance of uniting the community to fight hunger with dignity and respect. The Irving pantry is not only a place to receive food. It’s a symbol of student-led compassion and what we can accomplish when we work.

Today. Tomorrow. Together.
